Full Itinerary
-
Step into the heart of central-west Portugal and discover one of the country’s most sacred destinations. Our journey begins with a comfortable drive along the A1 motorway, heading north toward Fátima, a revered pilgrimage site that welcomes over six million visitors annually. It was here, in 1917, that three young shepherd children — Lúcia, Francisco, and Jacinta — reported monthly apparitions of the Virgin Mary, from May 13th to October 13th. These encounters, filled with symbolic messages and spiritual revelations, became known as the Three Secrets of Fátima, and continue to inspire devotion around the world.
-
At the heart of the sanctuary, visitors will find a powerful symbol of peace: a fragment of the Berlin Wall, gifted to Fátima as a tribute to divine intervention in the fall of communism. This sacred space invites reflection, faith, and a deeper connection to one of the most extraordinary stories in modern religious history.
-
After departing from Fátima, the journey continues westward toward Nazaré, a coastal gem famed for its dramatic cliffs and sweeping ocean views. We’ll pause here for a delightful lunch, surrounded by the salty breeze.
-
Nazaré charms visitors with its vibrant maritime character and scenic beauty, offering an authentic slice of Portuguese coastal life. Today, it is internationally celebrated as a mecca for big wave surfing, drawing thrill-seekers from across the globe. In 2011, it became a legend in surf history when Garrett McNamara, an American professional surfer, rode a colossal wave estimated at nearly 24 meters (79 feet) — the largest ever surfed at the time.
-
After exploring the wonders of Nazaré, the journey continues toward the enchanting village of Óbidos, a beautifully preserved medieval town encircled by ancient stone walls. With origins that trace back to the Celts and Romans, Óbidos became known as the “Town of Queens” due to its tradition of being gifted to Portuguese royalty throughout the centuries. Its charming cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, and majestic castle transport visitors to a bygone era, making it a true haven for lovers of history, architecture, and romance. No visit is complete without tasting the iconic Ginjinha de Óbidos — a sweet cherry liqueur traditionally served in a chocolate cup. This local delicacy, rooted in 17th-century monastic recipes, adds a flavorful touch to the experience and leaves a lasting impression of the town’s rich heritage.
-
From there, we pass through Torres Vedras, a town located along the A8 motorway, rich in military and strategic heritage. During the Peninsular War, it played a vital role through the construction of the Lines of Torres Vedras, an ingenious network of defensive fortifications that helped halt Napoleon’s troops. With roots going back to Roman times, Torres Vedras bears witness to centuries of resilience and tactical brilliance, offering a quiet yet powerful glimpse into Portugal’s wartime past.
