Why You Should Visit Setúbal

Full Itinerary
Available from the Lisbon or Setúbal area
-
Our journey begins at the vibrant Mercado do Livramento, considered in 2015 one of the best fish markets in the world. Inside, the stunning tiles by Pedro Pinto, dating from 1929, depict the city’s agricultural and fishing heritage. Prepare for a sensory experience of colors, fragrances, and flavors, as we explore stalls filled with fresh fish, local produce, and aromatic herbs, all animated by the energy of local producers.
-
In the historic center of Setúbal, we visit the Church of the former Convent of Jesus, a landmark of Manueline architecture dating back to 1490. This was the first convent built in the Manueline style and one of the few to survive the 1755 earthquake. Designed by the renowned architect Boitaca, the convent evokes an atmosphere of peace and complexity, where symbolism and artistic movement reflect the golden age of Portuguese discoveries.
-
For lunch, we stop at the Doca dos Pescadores, Setúbal’s charming dockside promenade. Here, you’ll choose from a variety of restaurants offering fresh regional fish, including the city’s iconic fried cuttlefish, known for its irresistible crunch. As you dine, enjoy the tranquil view of the blue Sado River.
-
After lunch, we venture into the heart of the Arrábida Mountains, one of the most profoundly beautiful and breathtaking places in Portugal. With its dramatic cliffs, lush vegetation, and serene atmosphere, this region is a true treasure of nature. Along the way, we’ll pause to absorb the landscape and its stories, including a visit to the mystical Convento da Arrábida, often described as the outskirts of heaven — a place of silence, spirituality, and timeless charm.
-
We then continue to the picturesque village of Azeitão, a region famed for its wines and cheeses, and once a noble retreat due to its privileged climate and proximity to Lisbon. In Azeitão, we’ll visit a traditional tile workshop, where artisans share the secrets of their craft in an intimate and welcoming setting. You’ll learn about the origins of Portuguese tiles, their symbolic colors, ornamentation, and the handmade process that transforms clay into art.
-
To conclude our cultural journey, we visit the Quinta do Alcube Winery, nestled in the heart of the Arrábida Natural Park. This family-run estate embodies a deep connection to nature, with love and dedication present from the grape harvest to the final product. Surrounded by stunning landscapes, you’ll enjoy a tasting of five wines — two white, two red, and one late harvest — in a setting that celebrates the harmony between tradition and terroir.
